Acrobat already had unique tabs system; the difficulty was incorporating another tab system with existing one. I started from many design options and two directions: tabs contains tabs, dropdown inside tabs.
I interviewed many users, the result was not surprising. People are familiar with general tab system because the experience of using browser. So we picked the design which could fit into Acrobat and aligning with browser tab without teaching users to learn.
We customized this tabs menu for the user can perform each document with various tools seamlessly in those tabs at Acrobat.
Most of the users don’t deal one pdf per time. And now, they can use one window to work on hundreds of documents instead of hundreds of windows.
Acrobat needed a better way to handle multiple documents instead of opening multiple windows. Our challenge was creating the multi-tabs system in this legacy product.
